What Is Sneaky Santa? Rules, Game & How It Differs From Secret Santa
On this store, Sneaky Santa is a gift exchange game for 3 to 50 players. Everyone brings one wrapped gift with no assigned recipient. Players pick a package, then use secret role cards to steal, protect, or swap gifts before anything is opened. That makes it different from standard Secret Santa, where each person draws a specific name and buys a gift for that recipient.

Use classic Secret Santa when the point is choosing something for one person. Choose Sneaky Santa when the group will meet in person and wants a party game built around broadly appealing gifts.
How to play Sneaky Santa in 5 steps
- Everyone brings one wrapped gift. Set one spending limit for the group. Do not write a recipient’s name on the package or shop for a specific person.
- Put every gift in the middle. The generator creates the turn order and privately assigns one card to each player.
- Pick gifts in order. Each player takes one wrapped package and keeps it closed.
- Play the cards in order. Reveal a card only when its owner uses it. Powers can move, protect, or swap gifts, but packages stay wrapped through the entire action round.
- Let Krampus act last, then unwrap. If Krampus is in the game, that card resolves after every other card. Once the final move is complete, everyone opens the gift in front of them.
New players only need two reminders: keep the packages closed and follow the wording on the card when it is revealed.
All 13 Sneaky Santa cards
The game has thirteen card types: one neutral card and twelve powers. Every player gets one card, but a single game will not necessarily include every type. Larger groups can receive duplicate cards.

How the generator balances the deck
The generator builds a deck for the actual group size. Every game includes one Krampus and at least one neutral Elf. Strong cards become more common as the group grows, while the remaining seats receive standard powers. With 3 to 5 players, standard powers come from a smaller set: Turn left, Sneak peek, Cross swap, Duel, and Elf Circle.

High-impact cards are Krampus, Double play, and Wild swap. There is exactly one Krampus. Any additional high-impact slots are divided between Double play and Wild swap. A small group still gets one move that can flip the outcome, while a large table gets enough action to keep gifts moving.
Set up the exchange before anyone buys
- Choose one spending cap. Decide whether wrapping and sales tax count, then apply the same rule to everyone. The guide to a fair Secret Santa budget can help.
- Ask for recipient-neutral gifts. No one knows who will end up with each package, so avoid sizing and name-based personalization.
- Keep gifts wrapped. Sneak peek is the only card that lets one player inspect two packages before the final reveal.
- Read each card out loud. Its wording settles the move and prevents house-rule arguments halfway through the round.
- Let the generator assign cards. The organizer should not decide who receives the strongest role.

Is Sneaky Santa the same as White Elephant or Dirty Santa?
They share the idea of a common gift pool and packages changing hands. The main difference is the mechanism. White Elephant and Dirty Santa usually let players open or steal gifts during turn-based play. In our Sneaky Santa game, gifts remain wrapped while secret cards control the swaps, protection, and final steal. The surprise is preserved until every card has resolved.
